Jonathan Groff is an American actor and singer best known for his roles in the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening and the Netflix series Mindhunter.
Jonathan Drew Groff was born on March 26, 1985, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His mother, Julie Groff, is a physical education teacher, and his father, Jim Groff, is a horse trainer. Jonathan grew up alongside his older brother, David, in a conservative Mennonite community. He attended Conestoga Valley High School, graduating in 2003.
After high school, Groff was accepted into Carnegie Mellon University; however, he postponed his enrollment to join the national tour of The Sound of Music. His acting career quickly gained momentum, and he ultimately chose to pursue professional opportunities full-time instead of returning to school.
Groff began his professional acting career in the early 2000s with several regional and off-Broadway productions. He achieved widespread acclaim playing Melchior Gabor in the original Broadway production of Spring Awakening in 2006. His dynamic performance earned him critical recognition, including nominations for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award.
Groff continued to remain active in theater, delivering a widely praised portrayal of King George III in the Broadway production of Hamilton from 2015 to 2016. His comedic timing and delivery in the role garnered him another Tony Award nomination, this time for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
Following his success on stage, Groff transitioned into television and film. He appeared as Henry Mackler on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live in 2007. From 2010 to 2015, he had a recurring role as Jesse St. James in the Fox musical series Glee, where he starred alongside long-time friend Lea Michele.
Groff took on a dramatic turn with roles in the political drama Boss (2012) and as the lead character Patrick Murray in HBO’s Looking (2014–15). In 2017, he began starring as FBI Special Agent Holden Ford in the Netflix crime-thriller series Mindhunter, produced by David Fincher. The show's second season premiered in August 2019, further cementing Groff's reputation as a versatile screen actor.
In addition to stage and screen acting, Jonathan Groff has lent his voice to several animated films. Notably, he voices Kristoff in Disney’s blockbuster Frozen (2013), its short films, and the sequel Frozen II (2019). His performance contributed to the global success of the films, enhancing his profile internationally.
Jonathan Groff came out publicly as gay during the National Equality March in Washington, D.C., in October 2009. He has since been recognized as an advocate for LGBTQ+ representation in the arts and frequently supports causes promoting equality and inclusivity.
Groff has been in relationships with fellow actors Gavin Creel and Zachary Quinto. Although he keeps his private life relatively low-key, his enduring friendship with actress Lea Michele has received public attention. The two met in 2006 while working on Spring Awakening and later reunited on Glee.
