Jorge Fernando Pinheiro de Jesus was born in Amadora, a city in the Lisbon District of Portugal. He is the son of Virgolino António de Jesus, who played for Sporting CP during the 1940s. Jorge Jesus began his youth football development with Sporting CP, where he completed his formation in the sport.
Jesus made his professional debut with S.C. Olhanense while on loan from Sporting CP. He also played briefly with Sporting's first team during the 1975–76 season, making 12 appearances as the club finished fifth in the Primeira Liga that year. Afterward, he played across various tiers of Portuguese football over a 17-year professional career. He represented more than a dozen clubs, including prominent stints at S.C. Farense, Vitória de Setúbal, União de Leiria, Juventude de Évora, Grupo Desportivo Riopele, and C.F. Os Belenenses. In total, he made 166 appearances and scored 14 goals, predominantly as a midfielder.
Jorge Jesus retired from professional football in 1989 at the age of 35. His final playing years included spells with C.F. Estrela da Amadora and participation in Portugal's lower leagues. Soon after retiring, Jesus began his managerial career with Amora FC and later moved to F.C. Felgueiras, taking over from Rodolfo Reis.
At Felgueiras, he helped the club achieve promotion to the top flight in his second season. Despite challenges, including intermittent shifts in leadership, Jesus solidified his reputation by leading teams effectively in the Segunda Liga.
In 2009, Jorge Jesus took over as the head coach of S.L. Benfica. During his tenure, he led the team to unprecedented domestic and international success. Jesus won ten major titles with Benfica, including multiple Primeira Liga championships and domestic cups, making him the most decorated coach in the club’s history at the time.
Under his management, Benfica also reached the finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2013 and 2014, losing narrowly on both occasions. These performances enhanced his reputation for tactical discipline, consistency, and building resilient defenses often referred to as tactical fortresses.
Following his successful period with Benfica, Jorge Jesus continued his coaching career with other clubs, including Sporting CP, which he previously played for. His return to Sporting CP, both as a former player and now as a coach, marked a full-circle moment in his professional journey. Throughout his various appointments, Jesus became known for his disciplined coaching methods and his ability to elevate team performance across different league environments.
Jorge Jesus married Ivone Jesus in 1991. The couple has one son, Mauro Jesus. He also has two children—Gonçalo and Tânia—from a previous marriage. In 2009, he invested £1 million in Banco Privado Português, a bank that later went bankrupt. By 2014, he had recovered approximately 80 percent of his initial investment.
At the height of his tenure with Benfica, Jesus earned an annual salary of approximately $5.5 million. His stint lasted six years, making him one of the longest-serving head coaches in the club’s recent history. His net worth is estimated to be around $25 million.
