Johnston went to Dobson High School in Mesa. While she didn't play on the school's soccer crew, choosing rather to play for Phoenix's Sereno Soccer Club, Johnston, all through her time in high school, volunteered as an understudy athletic coach.
On January 17, 2014, she signed with the Chicago Red Stars in the first round of the 2014 NWSL College Draft. Later on April 19, 2014, she made her debut in a match against the Western New York Flash and furthermore scored the main goal of the match. In the 2015 FIFA World Cup, she started in every single match of the competition and furthermore was named in the FIFA Women's World Cup All-Star Team. The United States was able to win the World Cup.

Julie got married to NFL player Zach Ertz in March 2017. The two had met through a shared companion during their school days in 2012. They were both going to a ball game in Stanford where Ertz taught while playing on the varsity football crew. Julie, at the time, was going to the close-by Santa Clara University where she studied while playing soccer for the Santa Broncos.
Their relationship turned into a long distance one when Ertz was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. Ertz commended his draft by requesting that his Nike rep send Julie a crisp pair of studs with his number and initials on it. After around 5 years of dating, Ertz took Johnston to the Stanford University arena where they initially met and requested that her wed him. Their wedding was held at Bacara Resorts Santa Barbara on the 26th of March 2017.
In June 2019, it was reported Julie Ertz's significant other, Zach Ertz, was in France rooting for his better half at the World Cup. Zach has been posting photographs on Instagram from his time in France.
