Kelly Brianne Clarkson was born on April 24, 1982. She is an American singer, songwriter, and children's book author. Her rise to fame began in 2002 when she won the inaugural season of American Idol. Since then, she has become one of the most commercially successful and influential artists to emerge from the show. Her parents are Jeanne Ann and Stephen Michael Clarkson.
Clarkson attended Pauline Hughes Middle School before graduating from Burleson High School. Upon graduation, she was offered scholarships by the University of Texas at Austin, the Berklee College of Music, and the University of North Texas. However, she declined these offers to focus entirely on pursuing a music career.
In 2002, encouraged by friends, Clarkson auditioned for the first season of American Idol. She won the competition on September 4, 2002, defeating the runner-up with 58% of the vote. Her victory earned her a recording contract and instantly launched her into the national spotlight.
Just weeks later, she released her debut single, “A Moment Like This,” on September 17, 2002. The song debuted at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and quickly soared to number one, breaking a record for the largest chart leap at the time. The single became the best-selling U.S. single of 2002.
Clarkson released her debut studio album, Thankful, in 2003. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in its first week. It was certified double Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sold over 4.5 million copies worldwide. Its lead single, “Miss Independent,” became an international hit and charted in the top ten in several countries.
Clarkson's second studio album, Breakaway, released in 2004, marked a major turning point in her career. It surpassed the commercial success of her debut and established her as a versatile pop-rock artist. Certified sextuple Platinum by the RIAA, the album topped charts around the world, including in Ireland and the Netherlands. Breakaway produced several hit singles and earned her two Grammy Awards, including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album.
She went on to release multiple successful albums and singles that further solidified her reputation in the music industry. Over the course of her career, Clarkson has sold more than 25 million albums and earned numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and American Music Awards.
Beyond music, Clarkson has pursued various acting and television projects. She starred in the 2003 musical film From Justin to Kelly and appeared in TV shows such as American Dreams. More recently, she has served as a coach on NBC’s The Voice and launched her own talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, which has been critically and commercially well-received.
In addition to her entertainment career, Clarkson has authored children’s books, including the best-selling “River Rose and the Magical Lullaby,” inspired by her daughter. Her multifaceted career has contributed to a substantial net worth, estimated at $28 million.
Clarkson began dating talent manager Brandon Blackstock, the son of her former manager Narvel Blackstock, after his previous marriage ended. The couple became engaged in 2012 and married on October 20, 2013. Together, they have two children, including a daughter born on June 12, 2014, and a son born in April 2016. Blackstock also has two children from his prior marriage. Though they later divorced in 2021, Clarkson remains committed to co-parenting and continues to focus on both family and career.
