Kirby Paul Smart was born on December 23, 1975, in Montgomery, Alabama, to a high school football coach. He spent his youth in Bainbridge, Georgia, where he developed a passion for football. Smart attended Bainbridge High School and later enrolled at the University of Georgia, where he majored in finance while playing as a defensive back for the Bulldogs football team.
During his collegiate career, Smart was a four-year letterman and earned First-Team All-SEC honors as a senior. He was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll four times and ranks among Georgia’s all-time leaders in interceptions. Though he went undrafted in the NFL, Smart signed a free-agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts following his graduation.
Smart began his coaching career in 1999 as an administrative assistant at the University of Georgia. In 2000, he joined Valdosta State University, initially as a defensive backs coach and later as defensive coordinator. From 2002 to 2003, he served as a graduate assistant at Florida State University while completing his master's degree in 2003.
He briefly coached safeties for the Miami Dolphins in 2006—his only season coaching in the NFL—after a stint on the Georgia coaching staff in 2005. In 2007, Smart joined the University of Alabama as an assistant coach under Nick Saban. Over the next nine years, he ascended to the role of defensive coordinator and became the highest-paid assistant coach in college football at the time. His defensive units were widely recognized as among the best in the nation.
On December 6, 2015, Smart returned to his alma mater as head football coach at the University of Georgia. He was tasked with revitalizing the program and has since led the Bulldogs to multiple College Football Playoff appearances and national championship contention.
While serving as Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Smart received national recognition for his coaching excellence. He won the Broyles Award on December 8, 2009, honoring the best assistant coach in college football, becoming the first Alabama assistant to receive the accolade. In 2012, he was named AFCA FBS Assistant Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Broyles Award again in 2015. His reputation as one of the nation’s top defensive minds remains firmly established.
Smart married Mary Beth Lycett in 2006. A former standout basketball player, Lycett was named Miss Georgia Basketball in her senior year at Morrow High School and later attended the University of Georgia. The couple has three children: twins Weston and Julia, born on February 8, 2008, and Andrew, born on May 25, 2012.
The family resides in Athens, Georgia, where Kirby Smart continues his role as head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs. Mary Beth Smart is actively involved in community and charitable initiatives. Contrary to earlier claims, the Smarts do not currently live in Florida, and Mary Beth Smart is not a mathematics teacher at Cooper City High School.
According to reports, Kirby Smart signed a six-year contract in 2016 with an annual salary of $3.5 million. His compensation has since increased with contract extensions reflecting his program's success. While his exact net worth is not publicly confirmed, it is estimated to be in the multi-million-dollar range due to his coaching salary and endorsements.
