In 2010 TLC launched Sister Wives a reality show based on Kody Brown and his extended family. The subject matter of the series was something more likely to generate the controvers This is because polygamy was already the most debated topic in America in context of the American culture. The family stated that part of the reason for doing the show was to increase awareness and acceptance of their way of life. Only a month after the show first aired Kody Brown came under investigation for polygamy. The Browns filed a complaint in the United States District Court for the District of Utah on July 13, 2011, that challenged Utah's criminal polygamy law. Eventually the criminal charges in Utah were dropped.
The show recieved mixed reviews from several media outlets. Shari Puterman, television columnist with the Asbury Park Press, felt the sister wives had issues with jealousy and self-worth, and she compared Kody to a cult leader. Several people have criticized the show for down playing the families religious convictions. Hank Stuever the Washington Post Writer named the series as Refreshingly Frank. The most interesting observation came from Los Angeles Times, TV critic Mary McNamara. She opined that the Brown’s family seemed to be a matriarchal arrangement more than a patriarchal one. The reason she gave is that all the wives seem to be the center the family, they are very much associated with each other and don’t bother much with their husband like traditional wives. Many other website such as Salon.com also appreciated the Kody family for bringing an unfamiliar topic into the open.
