Kris Letang is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman, born on April 24, 1987, in Montreal, Quebec. He began his hockey journey playing three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Val-d'Or Foreurs. During his junior career, Letang formed a close friendship with fellow defenseman Luc Bourdon, who was also a former teammate in both Val-d'Or and the Canadian junior national team.
On May 29, 2008, Luc Bourdon tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident. At the time, Bourdon was considered a promising prospect for the Vancouver Canucks. The incident had a deep impact on Letang, who had considered purchasing a motorcycle himself, but changed his mind following Bourdon's death.
Letang was selected 62nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2006–07 season and quickly established himself as a reliable two-way defenseman. Known for his skating, puck-handling, and power play capabilities, Letang became an integral part of the Penguins' lineup.
Letang has enjoyed significant success with the Pittsburgh Penguins, contributing to the team’s Stanley Cup victories. He was part of the Penguins’ championship team in 2009, defeating the Detroit Red Wings in a seven-game series. He played a pivotal role in the 2016 Stanley Cup run, when Pittsburgh triumphed over the San Jose Sharks. The Penguins repeated as champions in 2017 with a series win against the Nashville Predators, making Letang a three-time Stanley Cup Champion.
Kris Letang is in a long-term relationship with Catherine Laflamme. The couple welcomed their first child, a son, in November 2012. Their second child, a daughter, was born in July 2018. Laflamme gained additional public attention as a cast member of the third season of the Canadian reality television series "Hockey Wives," which showcases the lives of partners of professional hockey players.
