Lea Michele Sarfati was born on August 29, 1986, in The Bronx, New York, United States. She is the daughter of Edith T. Sarfati, a retired nurse, and Mark D. Sarfati, a real estate agent and former delicatessen owner. Michele spent the first four years of her life in The Bronx before her family relocated to the suburban town of Tenafly, New Jersey. The family also rented an apartment in Manhattan, which they used when Michele was performing on Broadway.
For her early education, Michele attended Rockland Country Day School in Congers, New York. She later adopted the stage name "Lea Michele" during her first audition for Les Misérables, choosing to drop her surname due to frequent mispronunciations and teasing. At this audition, she performed "Angel of Music" from The Phantom of the Opera—the only musical she knew at the time. Although she initially went to support a friend, Michele was cast herself, marking the beginning of her stage career.
Lea Michele made her Broadway debut in 1995 at the age of eight when she joined the cast of Les Misérables as the replacement for Young Cosette. She also understudied the role of Gavroche. In 1998, she played the Little Girl in the original Broadway cast of Ragtime, a role she had performed for over a year with the Toronto cast before its transfer to New York.
In 2004, Michele appeared in the Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof as Shprintze and also understudied the role of Chava. Around that same time, she was offered the role of Éponine in the revival of Les Misérables but chose instead to remain with the musical Spring Awakening, which opened on Broadway in December 2006. Her portrayal of Wendla Bergmann in Spring Awakening earned her a nomination for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
Lea Michele is actively involved in various philanthropic efforts focused on gay rights and animal welfare. In 2008, she participated in a PETA campaign, and in April 2010, appeared in a public service announcement opposing fur clothing. That same year, she was honored by PETA for her contributions to animal advocacy.
In support of LGBTQ+ rights, Michele spoke at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in November 2009. She also performed at the 2008 benefit concert "Alive in the World," which raised funds for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund. Michele has worked regularly with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and in October 2010, helped organize a benefit performance for The Painted Turtle, a camp for children with serious medical conditions. This event also commemorated the 35th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with Michele starring as Janet Weiss. In February 2011, she performed at the MusiCares Benefit in Los Angeles as part of The Grammy Awards' charitable events.
Before gaining mainstream fame on Glee, Lea Michele had several relationships within the Broadway community. She briefly dated actor Matthew Morrison. From 2006 to mid-2008, she was in a relationship with stage actor Landon Beard. She then dated actor and singer John Lloyd Young from summer 2008 until spring 2009. The two met while portraying Marius Pontmercy and Éponine in a staging of Les Misérables at the Hollywood Bowl.
In November 2009, Michele began dating Broadway actor Theo Stockman. The couple were together for nearly two years before parting ways in September 2011.
