Lea Salonga is known as a Filipina actress and singer. She is most famous for her Broadway performance in Les Misérables and the singing voices of Princess Jasmine and Mulan in the classic Disney animated films, Aladdin and Mulan.
Maria Lea Salonga was born on February 22, 1971 in Manila, Philippines. Lea’s father, Feliciano Genuino Salonga was the owner of a shipping company and her mother was Maria Ligaya Alcantara. Lea spent her childhood in Angeles City before moving back to the major Filipino city of Manila. She grew up with one brother named Gerard Salonga.
In 1988, she attended the O.B. Montessori Center in Greenhills, San Juan where she finished her secondary education. She also took part in most of her school's stage productions. During her auditions for the role of Kim in Miss Saigon, she was studying Biology at the University of Ateneo de Manila. She also went to the University of the Philippines where they had a program to teach musically talented children about stage movements and music.
Lea Salonga married Robert Charles Chien in 2004. Her husband is a Chinese-Japanese managing director of an entertainment company in California. She met him when she was performing in Flower Drum Song. They have a daughter together named Nicole Beverly Chien. Nicole was born in 2006 and was named after Robert’s late mother, Beverly. Lea got to perform with her daughter in the musical, Matilda.
Her husband, Robert is the cousin of one of Lea’s former castmates. Robert and Lea did not hit it off initially when they met. When she met Robert, she had recently been separated from her former boyfriend a few days before and was not looking for a new relationship. The next time she saw him, she invited him for dinner. After many dates, they started their committed relationship. Two years after dating, they announced their wedding. When she told her mom that she got engaged, her mom said that she knew Rob was serious and the right man for her daughter
Lea loves to tell the world that Robert is very supportive and has been a major force in raising their daughter. Whenever she is traveling for work, Robert takes care of their daughter. They have been married for over a decade and they are proud that they never had any major problems between them.
Her first notable relationship before Robert was with Richie Grau. After they broke up, she started dating Michael Lee in the year 2000. She met Robert soon after she got separated from Lee and found the love of her life. She said that Robert is a combination of everything she wanted in all of her previous boyfriends. Lea Salonga's professional acting debut was in the musical The King and I in 1978 when she was seven years old. In 1980, she played the lead role in Annie. She also appeared in other productions such as Fiddler on the Roof, The Rose T, The Sound of Music, Paper Moon, Goodbye Girl, The Fantasticks, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
In 1981, she recorded Small Voice which was her first studio album. Later in 1988, she released her second album Lea. During the 1980's, she was both a teen idol and a child actor in many projects. In 1983, she hosted Love, Lea, which was her own musical television show. Lea Salonga was the first Asian actress to play the roles of Éponine and Fantine in the famous Broadway musical Les Misérables in 1993. When the show was brought back in 2006, she reprised her role as Fantine.
After a long break from Broadway, she returned in 2015 to play the role of Kei Kimura in Allegiance. "Allegiance". Lea is a huge star in the Philippines because she is one of the few stars to have crossover success in Western culture. She was asked to be a judge and coach on the Philippine version of The Voice which was originally an American singing competition.
Regarding her work for Disney, she is extremely well-known for performing the singing voices of Mulan in the animated film Mulan in 1998 and Princess Jasmine in Aladdin in 1993. She also did the voice of Yasuko in the Japanese Anime, My Neighbor Totoro.
When she was a child, Lea was nominated for a FAMAS Award for Best Child Actress. She also won three Aliw Awards for best child performer in 1980, 1981 and 1982.
In 1991, Salonga did an amazing job as Kim in Miss Saigon, She was awarded a Tony award for Best Actress in a Musical. The role also led her to win the Theatre World and the Olivier awards. She was the first Asian woman to ever win a Tony Award.
In 1993, she was the first artist from the Philippines to sign with a major music label when she inked a deal with Atlantic Records. She was also the first Filipina artist to have a huge distribution and release of her album in the United States. Her albums sold over millions of copies worldwide and she became one of the bestselling Philippine artists of all time.
In 2011, she was honored alongside her fellow Disney princess voice actresses Anika Noni Rose, Jodi Benson and Paige O'Hara. They were all named Disney Legends for their work on Disney films.
