Born on December 13, 1970, in Dong Ha, Vietnam, Leyna Nguyen immigrated to the United States as a refugee in 1975. She spent most of her childhood in Burnsville, Minnesota, alongside her two older brothers. Nguyen attended Webster University in St. Louis, where she earned a degree in Mass Communication. During her time at Webster, she worked as a substitute teacher and also gained experience in broadcasting by working for the university’s jazz radio station, WEBU.
Outside of her academic and professional endeavors, Nguyen has a variety of interests. She enjoys cooking, plays multiple musical instruments, is trained in martial arts, and has an affinity for paragliding.
Nguyen began her career in broadcast journalism at WRDW-TV, a CBS affiliate in Augusta, Georgia. She later moved on to KCRA-TV in Sacramento, California, where she worked as a news anchor and hosted a program focusing on issues affecting both Asia and America.
In 1997, she joined KCAL-TV in Los Angeles and became a familiar face to Southern California viewers. She anchored the station’s nightly newscasts between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Additionally, Nguyen held the unique distinction of being the only reporter at the time to work simultaneously for both KCBS and KCAL-TV, two major stations within the same market.
Leyna Nguyen's contributions to journalism have been widely recognized. She is a three-time Emmy Award winner. Her first Emmy came for coverage of the 20th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. The second was awarded for a moving story about an organ transplant for a young boy. Her third Emmy recognized her work as Best News Feature Reporter.
In 1996, she was honored with the YWCA Woman of the Year Award. In 2000, she was named one of the "25 Most Influential Vietnamese-Americans," and in 2011, the California State Legislature awarded her the Woman of the Year title for her philanthropic contributions.
Beyond news media, Nguyen has had visibility in the entertainment world. She won the Miss Asia USA pageant in 1987 and has since appeared in numerous television shows and films. Her credits include roles in productions such as Austin Powers, NCIS, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Boston Legal. She has also worked closely with the Vietnamese entertainment industry, appearing in several Vietnamese-American films and projects.
Additionally, Nguyen has co-hosted the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon alongside Casey Kasem and served as co-host for the Southern California Olympic Summer Games with NBA Hall of Famer James Worthy.
Leyna Nguyen is an active philanthropist and founder of the Love Across The Ocean Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at improving the lives of underprivileged children and supporting refugees in Southern California. Through the foundation, Nguyen has organized numerous charity events and continues to be involved in community outreach initiatives.
Nguyen married Michael Muriano in 2005, and together they have two children. She keeps her family life largely private, and little public information is available about her children. Although there were unconfirmed media rumors in 2013 about a possible relationship with television personality Kato Kaelin, no credible sources have substantiated those claims.
According to available biographical information, Nguyen earns approximately $175,000 annually, and her estimated net worth is $500,000.
