Lizbeth MacKay was born on March 7, 1949, in Buffalo, New York. She is the daughter of Robert MacKay, a salesman, and Alice MacKay, a dancer. Demonstrating an early passion for the performing arts, MacKay pursued her education at Adelphi University before continuing at the prestigious Yale School of Drama, where she refined her skills in acting and stage performance.
MacKay made her professional stage debut in 1970 at the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut. She went on to have a distinguished stage career, appearing in numerous Broadway productions including All My Sons, The Price, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, The Heiress, Doubt, and Crimes of the Heart. Her performance in Crimes of the Heart was particularly well received, earning her several awards including the Theatre World Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Drama-Logue Award.
In addition to her extensive work on stage, Lizbeth MacKay has appeared in a number of film and television roles. Her film credits include notable performances in Spike Lee’s biographical drama Malcolm X (1992) and the drama Marvin’s Room (1996), which starred Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, and Leonardo DiCaprio. She also had recurring roles on daytime television, including appearances in the soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live.
Lizbeth MacKay married Wayne George Hawley in December 1978. The couple has two children. Despite maintaining a relatively private personal life, MacKay continues to be respected for her contributions to American theater, film, and television.
