Mahershala Ali is an American actor and rapper who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Richard Tyler in the science fiction television series The 4400. The 4400 was written by Scott Peters and Rene Echevarria and ran for four seasons from 2004 to 2007; in the film, an enormous ball of light causes forty four hundred people to disappear and then later reappear confused and disoriented, but not having aged since the time of their disappearance. Mahershala Ali was born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore on February 16, 1974, in Oakland, California; his father was an actor. Ali graduated from St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga with a degree in mass communication. He would later earn a master’s degree in the graduate program of New York University.
Ali has gained popularity for his portrayal of political lobbyist Remy Danton in the Netflix series House of Cards and as Cornell Stokes in Marvel’s Luke Cage. Ali won the Academy Award for Best Supporting actor for his performance as a drug dealer in the 2016 film Moonlight; he was the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. He was also awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Critic’s Choice Award for the same performance. Mahershala Ali married Amatus-Sami Karim; the couple has a daughter.
