Margaret Brennan was born and raised in Connecticut. She attended the University of Virginia, where she graduated with distinction in 2002 with a Bachelor’s degree in Foreign Affairs. She was recognized as an Emmerich-Wright scholar for the excellence of her thesis. Additionally, Brennan studied Middle East studies and minored in the Arabic language at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan, through a Fulbright-Hays Grant.
Brennan began her career in broadcasting in 2002 as a news producer at CNBC. She worked on “Louis Rukeyser’s Wall Street,” a weekly financial news program, where she was responsible for writing content and booking guests. She also served as a producer for the network's show “Street Signs.”
In 2009, Brennan moved to Bloomberg Television, where she became the anchor of the mid-morning weekday program “In Business.” Her reporting emphasized the intersection of government and business, with a particular focus on economic and financial developments at the New York Stock Exchange. She remained at Bloomberg Television until 2012.
Brennan joined CBS News in 2012 as a correspondent assigned to cover the U.S. State Department. She is based in Washington, D.C., and also serves as a general assignment reporter. Brennan is currently the moderator of “Face the Nation,” a flagship Sunday morning news program on CBS News. She has previously contributed to “CBS Evening News.”
Throughout her career, Margaret Brennan has conducted high-profile interviews and covered major international and economic events. At CNBC, she interviewed notable figures such as President George W. Bush and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Her global business reporting included coverage of the European debt crisis, the BP oil spill, and the insider trading investigations in the United States.
While with Bloomberg, Brennan delivered live reports from global financial hubs including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Davos, Dublin, and London. She also covered significant political events such as the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, reporting from Cairo's Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring.
In recognition of her efforts to foster international understanding, Brennan received a Fulbright Award in 2010. Earlier in her career, she was named one of the “Top Journalists Under 30” by the TJFR Group and NewsBios in 2003. While a ranking from Maxim in 2008 labeled her one of the "Hottest News Anchors," her professional achievements have consistently remained the focus of her career.
Brennan holds prestigious affiliations and contributes her expertise to several organizations. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the advisory boards of the Economic Club of New York and the Smurfit School of Business at University College Dublin.
