Michael W. Smith is an American musician known for his significant influence on the genre of Christian rock. Michael Whitaker Smith was born on October 7, 1957, in Kenova, West Virginia. His father was a former minor league baseball player and worker at the Ashland Oil Refinery and his mother was a caterer. At an early age, Michael learned to play piano and sang in his church choir. At the age of ten, Michael had an intense religious experience that led him to Bible study and becoming a devout Christian. After graduating high school, Michael became involved with drugs and alcohol and although he attended Marshall University; he dropped out after just one semester.
Michael was able to recommit to Christianity and signed on as a keyboardist for the group Higher Ground. Smith is a three-time Grammy Award winner and has recorded thirty one hit songs, fourteen gold albums and five platinum albums; he has also collaborated on a Christmas album with U2’s lead singer Bono. Smith won the Male Vocalist of the Year award at the GMA Music Awards in 2003. Michael is married to Deborah Kay Davis and the couple has five children, Ryan, Whitney, Tyler, Anna Elizabeth, and Emily. They currently reside in Nashville and attend Belmont Church.
