Nick Clooney was born on January 13, 1934, in Maysville, Kentucky. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a corporal. During his military service, he worked for the American Forces Network as a disc jockey, hosting programs such as Music in the Air and Melody-Go-Round.
In 1959, Clooney married Nina Warren. By the 1960s, he transitioned into broadcast journalism, initially working as a news anchor for WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky. His charisma and on-air presence led to the launch of his own talk show, The Nick Clooney Show, which gained popularity after premiering in Ohio. The show featured interviews, music performances, and a mix of local and national topics, building Clooney’s reputation in regional television.
Clooney rose to national prominence in the 1970s with his role as the host of the ABC game show The Money Maze. However, he is perhaps most respected for his journalistic coverage of the 1977 Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in Southgate, Kentucky, which claimed the lives of 165 people. His reporting during this tragedy earned praise for its compassion and integrity.
In 1984, Clooney relocated to Los Angeles, California, to further pursue opportunities in broadcast journalism. He worked primarily with NBC and later took on assignments with FOX News affiliates in Utah. These roles expanded his range and added to his longstanding career as an insightful and trusted news anchor.
In 2004, Clooney entered the political arena, running as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Kentucky's 4th Congressional District. His campaign focused on issues such as media responsibility, education, and civil rights. Despite being nominated, he was not elected, losing to Republican Geoff Davis by a margin of 44% to 54%.
In 2006, Clooney and his son, actor George Clooney, traveled to Darfur, Sudan, to raise awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. The trip resulted in the documentary A Journey to Darfur, which was later broadcast on cable television to increase public awareness of the atrocities occurring there.
Nick Clooney is also the father of Adelia "Ada" Clooney, who married Norman Zeidler in 1987. His family relationships and commitment to public service have remained central themes throughout his life and work.
