Nick Schmit was born in 1981 and is a graduate of the University of North Dakota. Shortly after completing his undergraduate education, he began his career in public service and nonprofit work, gaining early experience that would shape his future political and diplomatic endeavors.
Schmit built a substantive career in public affairs and diplomacy, beginning with the Clinton Foundation. He later joined Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, contributing to the organization and outreach efforts. Following the campaign, Schmit transitioned to a role at the U.S. Department of State, where he served under Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry.
At the State Department, Schmit held the position of Assistant Chief of Protocol, where he played a key role in managing diplomatic engagements and official state functions. He remained in this position until 2013, helping to facilitate vital international relations through protocol excellence and global outreach initiatives.
Now based in Washington, D.C., Nick Schmit works as a Global Public Affairs Strategist. In this capacity, he draws upon his rich experience in diplomacy and policy to support international communication strategies and public engagement for both governmental and private sector clients.
In 2011, Schmit was introduced to Washington Post journalist and MSNBC contributor Jonathan Capehart by mutual friend Jed Hastings, who believed they would be a good match. Their relationship developed over the following years, and in 2016, Capehart proposed during a romantic trip to the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
The couple was married in January 2017 in a ceremony officiated by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Their partnership represents a prominent example of LGBTQ leadership and visibility in American public life, particularly within the intersection of media and government affairs.
