She was born in Rome to a Neapolitan journalist father and Ilse Renate Krause, a Baltic German sculptor originally from Estonia. Muti's maternal grandparents emigrated from Leningrad to Estonia. She has an older sister, Claudia, born in 1950.

Muti began her career as a model before transitioning into acting. She made her film debut in 1970 at the age of 15 in the Italian drama La moglie più bella (The Most Beautiful Wife), directed by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damiano_Damiani">Damiano Damiani</a>.
