Patricia Helen Heaton was born on March 4, 1958, in Bay Village, Ohio. She was raised as a Roman Catholic by her father, Chuck and her mother, Patricia. Her father was a sportswriter for Plain Dealer. She has three sisters named Sharon, Frances, and Alice. She also has a brother named Michael. After her high school graduation, she went to study at Ohio State University. She graduated from college with a degree in Drama. After her college graduation, she shifted to New York City and studied drama with her teacher, William Esper.
Patricia Heaton showed up in the musical, Don't Get God Started (1987). When Stage Three Productions brought one of their creations to Los Angeles, Heaton got the attention of a casting chief for the ABC show Thirty Something. She was given a role as an oncologist. In October 2006, Heaton appeared in a commercial opposing a Missouri state constitutional amendment concerning embryonic stem cell research, which subsequently passed. The advertisement was a response to the election of Democratic Senate hopeful Claire McCaskill and aired at the same time as Michael J. Fox's advertisement supporting the amendment.
