Patty Jenkins is an American screenwriter and film director known for her work on the films Monster and Wonder Woman. She was born on July 24, 1971, in Victorville, California. Her father was a decorated U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, and her mother was an environmental scientist. Jenkins completed her undergraduate studies in 1993 at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. She later earned a master's degree in directing from the American Film Institute's AFI Conservatory in 2000.
In 2003, Jenkins wrote and directed the crime drama Monster, which depicted the real-life story of Aileen Wuornos, a former sex worker who was convicted and executed for the murders of seven men. The film gained critical acclaim and earned Charlize Theron an Academy Award for Best Actress. Jenkins received the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, establishing her as a respected voice in the industry.
Patty Jenkins' long-standing interest in superhero stories made her an ideal choice to direct the 2017 DC superhero film Wonder Woman. The film became a global success, praised for its direction, storytelling, and empowerment themes. Jenkins was the first woman to direct a major superhero film with a female protagonist and was lauded for breaking barriers in the male-dominated film industry.
Following the success of Wonder Woman, Jenkins returned to direct the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, which was released by Warner Bros. Pictures in 2020. Despite facing the challenges of a pandemic-era release, the film received significant attention and continued to highlight Jenkins as a leading figure in modern film direction.
Patty Jenkins is married to Sam Sheridan, a former firefighter and author best known for his book A Fighter’s Heart. The couple has one son and resides in Santa Monica, California.
