PHYSICAL PROFILE AND EARLY LIFE
Peyton Derek Hillis, a former American football player known for his powerful 6'2" frame and 250-pound build, played both fullback and running back positions in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on January 21, 1986, in Conway, Arkansas.
Hillis began his football journey at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he played from 2004 to 2007. Majoring in sociology, Hillis made a significant impact as a fullback. During his freshman year, he recorded 240 rushing yards, 97 receiving yards, and scored eight total touchdowns. His consistent performance throughout college contributed to his selection in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.
Hillis began his professional career with the Denver Broncos in 2008. He earned his first win with the team in a game against the Oakland Raiders. However, the team later faced a 26–17 loss to the Miami Dolphins that same season. Injuries briefly sidelined Hillis, but he returned to become Denver’s starting running back.
In a notable comeback, Hillis helped the Broncos to a 24–20 road victory over the Atlanta Falcons. He followed that with a standout performance against the New York Jets, rushing for a touchdown across 22 attempts in a 34–17 road win.
Due to his perseverance and strong work ethic, Hillis received individual accolades such as the Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week and the FedEx Ground Player of the Week. Despite his emergence, recurring injuries and internal team disagreements led to his departure from the Broncos in March 2010 after two seasons.
In 2010, Hillis joined the Cleveland Browns, where he played both fullback and running back. That season marked the peak of his NFL career. He rushed for over 1,100 yards and scored 11 rushing touchdowns. His popularity among fans helped him defeat other NFL stars in a nationwide vote to become the cover athlete for Madden NFL 12.
Despite his standout year, Hillis struggled with injuries and contract issues the following season. As a result of the team's changing direction and an inability to reach a new contract agreement, Hillis parted ways with the Browns after two seasons.
Hillis signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012. His stint with the team was brief and did not match the success he found in Cleveland. He later signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but saw limited playing time and did not make a lasting impact.
In October 2013, Hillis joined the New York Giants. After a few weeks with the team, he was offered a two-year contract extension worth $1.8 million. However, ongoing health concerns, particularly repeated concussions, prompted medical professionals to advise his retirement. On February 25, 2015, Hillis officially retired from professional football, stating in an interview that his "heart was no longer in the game."
Following his retirement, Hillis settled into a quieter life away from sports. He purchased a 1,300-acre soybean farm in southwestern Tennessee, where he currently resides. He is married to Amanda Brown, and together they have a son named Orry.
Outside of football, Hillis briefly entered the political spotlight when he publicly endorsed Ron Paul during the 2012 U.S. Presidential Election.
