Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, better known as Prince William, is the Duke of Cambridge. He was born on June 21, 1982, at St Mary’s Hospital in London, as the eldest child of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales. His birth was a significant and celebrated event for the royal family, being the first direct descendant of the British monarch in the royal family of Wales to be born since 1905. He was christened shortly thereafter and was given six godparents, reflecting his importance in the royal lineage.
As a child, Prince William once expressed a wish to become a police officer before understanding the duties of his birthright. He attended four different schools and ultimately graduated from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where he studied geography. His time at school was a mix of normal childhood experiences and royal obligations. Although playful and often under the public eye, he conformed to the expectations of royal conduct.
Prince William began preparing for his future public duties at a young age, frequently joining his father on royal tours and engagements. His first international trips included visits to New Zealand and Australia in 1983. Despite early safety concerns about multiple heirs traveling together, Prince William accompanied his parents on these important tours during his infancy.
In 2005, he began military training and, in 2006, enrolled at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. After completing his course, he was commissioned as an officer and began further specialized training. In 2009, he qualified as a helicopter pilot with the Royal Air Force and was assigned to the RAF Search and Rescue Force. He graduated from the Defence Helicopter Flying School in 2010, and later that year took part in his first rescue mission with the coast guard near Liverpool. He served with the British Armed Forces from 2006 until formally leaving the military in September 2013.
Beyond his royal duties, Prince William has a range of personal interests and hobbies. He is an avid polo player, often participating in charity matches to raise funds for various causes. A passionate motorcyclist, he enjoys riding alongside his brother, Prince Harry, who owns a Ducati 1198 S Corse. He is also a dedicated supporter of sports in the United Kingdom. A lifelong fan of Aston Villa Football Club, he serves as the President of the English Football Association (FA). Since 2007, he has acted as the Vice Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), and in 2014, he became President of the British Sub-Aqua Club, continuing a family tradition previously held by both his father and grandfather.
Prince William’s personal life attracted sustained public interest, particularly regarding his long-term relationship with Catherine Middleton. After years of speculation, the couple announced their engagement in November 2010 during a trip to Kenya. Their engagement marked a significant moment in royal modernity and tradition, although it was met initially with cautious enthusiasm by some royal observers. They married on April 29, 2011, in a widely televised ceremony at Westminster Abbey. On the same day, Queen Elizabeth II granted William the dukedom of Cambridge.
The royal couple welcomed their first child, Prince George, in July 2013 and their second child, Princess Charlotte, on May 2, 2015. Balancing royal responsibilities with family life, Prince William has committed himself to both public service and personal dedication as a husband and father, earning him widespread admiration and respect throughout the United Kingdom and abroad.
