Robert Blake, born Michael James Gubitosi on September 18, 1933, in Nutley, New Jersey, is a former American actor best known for his extensive career in film and television. He was the son of Elizabeth Cafone and Giacomo Gubitosi. Blake began acting at a young age under the stage name Mickey Gubitosi. His first credited role was as Toto in the 1939 MGM film Bridal Suite.
Shortly afterward, Blake became a regular in MGM’s popular short-subject series Our Gang, also known as The Little Rascals. From 1939 to 1944, he appeared in over 40 of these shorts, eventually becoming one of the lead characters. In 1942, Blake portrayed Tooky Stedman in Andy Hardy's Double Life. He made his final appearance in the series with Dancing Romeo in 1944.
For his contributions to Our Gang, Blake later received the Young Artist Foundation’s Former Child Star “Lifetime Achievement” Award. After serving in the U.S. Army beginning in 1950, he returned to Southern California and resumed his acting career, transitioning to adult roles in both film and television.
In the decades that followed, Blake earned acclaim for his acting skills and became a recognized figure in Hollywood. He starred in notable productions such as In Cold Blood (1967), where he portrayed real-life killer Perry Smith, and the 1970s television series Baretta, for which he won an Emmy Award.
In 2000, Blake married Bonnie Lee Bakley. Their relationship soon became the focus of intense public interest. Tragically, Bakley was shot and killed in 2001. In 2002, Blake was arrested and charged with her murder. After a high-profile trial, he was acquitted in 2005 due to insufficient evidence linking him directly to the crime.
Although Blake was later found liable for her wrongful death in a civil trial and ordered to pay damages, he always maintained his innocence. The case remains one of the most sensational and controversial in Hollywood history.
Following the trial, Robert Blake retired from acting. He has largely stayed out of the public eye in his later years. Once a prominent Hollywood actor, Blake’s legacy remains complex—shaped both by his successful entertainment career and his involvement in a highly publicized criminal case.
As of today, Blake remains retired and lives a private life. He is remembered for his contributions to American film and television, earning accolades during both his youth and adult career.
