Ruriko Asaoka, born Nobuko Asai on July 2, 1940, in Changchun, Jilin, China, is a renowned Japanese actress. Although she was born in China, her parents hailed from Tokyo, Japan. She attended Chiyoda Ward Imagawa Junior High School in Tokyo, where she began to show an early interest in acting.
In 1954, while still a student, Asaoka auditioned for a role in the film “Midori Haruka ni” (commonly translated as "Green, Far Away"), which was released in 1955. The film marked her debut, and its success helped her gain widespread recognition in the Japanese film industry.
Asaoka continued to build her career with notable roles throughout the 1950s. In 1956, she starred in the film “Affection,” which featured a controversial kissing scene. Although the scene made her uneasy, her father encouraged her by saying, “If you can’t do a good job, you’ll end up a one-time movie actress.” In 1958, she appeared in the film “Zessho.”
By August 1961, she ended her relationship with actor Asahi Kobayashi. Although this marked a challenging period in her personal life, Asaoka was later supported by fellow actor Yujiro Ishihara, who played a significant role in her professional growth.
In 1964, Asaoka starred in “Sunset Hill” and went on to feature in several popular action series, including "Wataridori" (Migratory Birds), "Hana" (Flower), and "Ginza Whirlwind," many of which were directed by Yoshihiro Kobayashi and featured Yujiro Ishihara. She played leading roles in acclaimed films such as “Red Handkerchief” (1964) and “Night Fog, Thank You” (1967).
In 1966, she signed an exclusive contract with Nikkatsu and joined Ishihara Productions, further solidifying her position as one of the studio’s marquee actresses.
In addition to her acting career, Asaoka also pursued singing, often performing theme songs for movies. One of her most notable singles was “Love Fossil,” released in 1969, which became a hit. Over the course of her career, she appeared in more than 150 films. Her best-known film appearances include “Alone Across the Pacific,” “To Love Again,” “Thirst for Love,” “Machibuse,” and several entries in the long-running series “Otoko wa Tsurai yo.”
Asaoka has received numerous honors for her contributions to the performing arts. In 2002, she was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon for artistic achievement. In 2011, she was further honored with the Order of the Rising Sun, 4th Class, Gold Rays with Rosette. Her other accolades include the Grand Prize at the 6th Golden Arrow Awards, the Graph Award in the late 1960s, the Actress Award at the 21st Kinema Junpo Awards in 1975, the Tokyo Metropolitan Honorary Prize in 1989, and the 24th Kazuo Kikuta Theater Award in 1999.
Ruriko Asaoka married actor Koji Ishizaka in 1971. The couple later divorced in 2000. Prior to her marriage, she was romantically involved with actor Asahi Kobayashi in the early 1960s. The reasons for their separation remain private.
Despite her status as a household name in Japanese cinema, Asaoka maintains a relatively low profile on social media. However, she can be followed on Instagram. Her total net worth remains undisclosed.
