Shirley Ballas is an English ballroom dancer and esteemed dance teacher, born on September 17, 1960, in Wallasey, Merseyside, England. Raised in Wallasey by her mother, Audrey, alongside her brother David, Ballas experienced a challenging early childhood. Her father left the family when she was just two years old. By the age of seven, she began taking dance lessons, marking the beginning of a lifelong dedication to ballroom dancing.
As a teenager, Ballas quickly rose through the competitive ranks of dance. At 15, she moved to North Yorkshire to pursue a partnership with British Ballroom Champion Nigel Tiffany. Their dance collaboration eventually took them to London, though the partnership ended shortly after.
Following this, Ballas auditioned to partner with dancer Sammy Stopford. The two found both personal and professional success, marrying when Ballas was 18. Their partnership culminated in a win at the Professional Latin category of the Blackpool Dance Festival in 1983. The couple’s marriage ended after five years, but their achievements on the dance floor left a lasting legacy.
In the late 1980s, Shirley Ballas married fellow dancer Corky Ballas. Together, they found continued success, winning the Professional Latin title at the Blackpool Dance Festival in both 1995 and 1996. Following these victories, the couple relocated to Houston, Texas, to further extend their competitive and coaching careers in the United States.
In 1986, Shirley and Corky Ballas welcomed their son, Mark Ballas, who would go on to become a professional ballroom dancer in his own right. He later gained fame through his appearances on competitive dance television shows.
By 1996, Shirley transitioned from competitive dancing to coaching, becoming a respected judge and mentor in both ballroom and Latin American dance circuits. Her judging career and influence as a teacher have made her one of the most recognized figures in the world of professional dance.
