Sophie Lowe was born in 1990 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. In 2000, her family relocated to Australia, where she would later build her career in the entertainment industry. As a teenager, she initially signed with Chadwick Models but soon decided to pursue acting full-time.
Lowe's early work included lead roles in short films such as Mirage, in which she played the character Hayley. This film premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival. She also appeared in He, She, It, and several television commercials. Lowe completed her secondary education at The McDonald College in 2008, a school known for nurturing performing arts talent.
Lowe's breakthrough came in 2009 when she starred in the critically acclaimed film Beautiful Kate. Her performance earned her a nomination for the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Lead Actress. Although she did not win, the nomination significantly elevated her profile in the industry.
In 2010, Lowe portrayed Natalie in the Australian thriller Blame. The film received positive attention and was screened at several international festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival and the Melbourne International Film Festival. It also appeared at the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival, where Lowe’s performance was praised.
Lowe starred as Alice in the American fantasy-drama series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, a spin-off of the popular show Once Upon a Time. The series aired for one season. She later played Lena in the U.S. drama The Returned and appeared as Kitty Ballantyne in the Australian TV series The Beautiful Lie, a modern adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.
Alongside fellow McDonald College alumnus Rhys Wakefield, Lowe co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in the short film A Man Walks into a Bar, which became a finalist at the Tropfest Short Film Festival. The pair had previously collaborated in the feature film After the Dark, which contributed to their creative partnership.
In addition to her acting, Sophie Lowe is also a singer and songwriter. She initially released music under the alias SOLO, including a five-track EP in 2013 available on Bandcamp. One of her tracks, "Dreaming," had a music video directed by her After the Dark co-star Bonnie Wright. Later, Lowe chose to release music under her own name, expressing that while she enjoys making music in her spare time, acting remains her foremost passion and profession.
