Steph McGovern was born on May 31, 1982, in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom. She won an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship during her sixth form studies in 1998. McGovern studied math, physics, design technology, and business during her college schooling. By the age of 19, Steph McGovern was given the "Young Engineer for Britain" award after she saved Black & Decker 150,000 pounds a year by helping to improve their product production techniques for the Leaf Hog. She went on to study Science, Communication, and Policy at University College London.
