Green River was an American rock band formed by Steve Turner, Alex Vincent, Mark Arm, and Jeff Ament. Green River was formed in Seattle in 1984. Gossard was invited to join Green River to allow Mark Arm to concentrate on singing rather than playing guitar for the band. Prior to the invitation to join Green River, Gossard, Turner, and Vincent attended Northwest School together. They debuted a single called Dry as Bone in through Sub-Pop in 1987. They released a full-length album called Rehab Doll quite after the success of Dry as Bone. After the single was released, Green River was disbanded in 1987. After Gossard left Green River, he formed a new band called Mother Love Bone in 1988 alongside Ament and Fairweather. They performed around Seattle and by late 1988, they were considered to be one of Seattle’s most promising bands. In March 1989, the band debuted an EP called Shine. Less than a year after the EP debut, they debuted a studio album called Apple. One of the important figures in Mother Love Bone, Wood died of a drug overdose. The death immediately caused Mother Love Bone to disband.
After Mother Lover Bone disbanded, Gossard met up with his childhood friend Mike McCready and was very impressed with McCready’s work in jamming with the local band. Gossard reconnected back with Ament and the trio was trying to form their own band until they were invited to be part of the Temple of the Dog band founded by Soundgarden's Chris Cornell. Cornell was Wood’s roommate and wanted to make the band as a tribute to Wood. The band started to practice songs that Cornell wrote. According to Five Horizons transcribed by Justin Nicholls in 1991, Gossard revealed that the recording process as a "non-pressure filled" situation because there were no expectations or pressure coming from the record company.
Pearl Jam was formed in 1990 by Ament, Gossard, and McCready. Later that year, they recruited Dave Krusen as the band drummer and Eddie Vedder as the lead singer. After their album, Ten is finished recording, Krusen left Pearl Jam and was replaced by Matt Chamberlain. Pearl Jam has created a total of ten albums which are Ten (1991), Vs. (1993), Vitalogy (1994), No Code (1996), Yield (1998), Binaural (2000), Riot Act (2002), Pearl Jam (2006), Backspacer (2009), and Lightning Bolt (2013). Pearl Jam has sold 32 million records in the United States and 60 million worldwide.
