Syma Chowdhry is an Emmy-nominated television news anchor, reporter, producer, model, and actress. She is currently a news reporter for KYW-TV CBS in Philadelphia.
Born in Staten Island, New York, Syma Chowdhry is of South Asian descent—her father is of Pakistani origin and her mother is of Indian heritage. She was raised in New Jersey, where she gained early recognition by winning a national pageant title as New Jersey’s Perfect Teen during high school. Chowdhry pursued her higher education at Temple University in Philadelphia, earning a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.
In 2006, Chowdhry married Aamer, an attorney, in New Jersey. The couple was introduced through mutual friends.
Chowdhry began her television career in high school, hosting a local entertainment and features program for Adelphia Cable. After completing her degree, she started professionally as a features reporter at News 14 Carolina in North Carolina, where she also served as a web content developer.
She later joined News 12 New Jersey, initially working in the entertainment division before transitioning to hard news reporting. Her impactful street reporting covered a wide range of stories including crime, weather events, and community issues. She became known for her ability to present emotionally charged stories with clarity and accuracy.
Chowdhry has also worked for CBS’s CW50 in Detroit and currently reports for KYW-TV CBS in Philadelphia. Additionally, she contributes stories to HLN and other media outlets on a freelance basis.
In 2008, Chowdhry received a Telly Award in recognition of her compelling on-the-scene reporting. She was also nominated for an Emmy during her tenure as a news anchor in Detroit. Among her notable coverage was reporting from the American Idol auditions and contributing to high-profile stories, including international coverage of the Russia–Georgia conflict.
Beyond hard news, she has a strong background in entertainment journalism. Chowdhry created and produced "E-Asylum," a program featured on The University Network that highlights red carpet events, film industry news, and other entertainment segments.
In addition to her journalism career, Chowdhry has actively participated in beauty pageants. She was the third runner-up in the 2002 Miss New Jersey Pageant, first runner-up in the Miss Pennsylvania USA competition, and won the Miss Central Coast title in 2003, which qualified her to compete again for Miss New Jersey.
She also contributes as a freelance reporter for pet-focused media and has written articles for the pet news website Zootoo.com.
