T. R. Knight is an American actor who is best known for his portrayal of the character Dr. George O’Malley on ABC’s medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Theodore Raymond Knight was born on March 26, 1973, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. T. R. became involved with the Guthrie Theater at the age of five. He attended high school at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield. T. R. enrolled at the University of St. Thomas but dropped out to pursue acting, landing leading roles at the Guthrie Theater.
In 2003, T. R. received a Drama Desk Award nomination for his performance in MCC Theater’s production of Scattergood. In 2005, T.R. was cast as Dr. George O’Malley in the medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy. T.R. was written out of the show after the fifth season owing to what he called a “breakdown in communication” with the show’s executive producer Shonda Rhimes that was centered on his character’s lack of screen time and his decision to come out as gay. T. R. was married on October 5, 2013, to his long time partner Patrick B. Leahy. Patrick is a ballet dancer and a writer. The couple, who had been dating for five years, was married in Hudson, New York. T. R. Knight received a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 59th Emmy awards for his role in Grey’s Anatomy.
