Personal Life
In 2001, at the age of 17, he married to Heidi Van Pelt, who was 33 years old woman and 16 years older to him. He is known for giving legal notice & accusing his parents for using his funds of about 1.5 Million dollars which he earned over his acting in Home Improvement, which he gained at age of 18 years from a trust fund. At 18, he gained control of his $1.5 million trust fund, which he accused his parents of squandering by purchasing themselves a mansion.
His mother, Candy Bennici, stated in 2015, "Of course we didn’t touch his money... It was in a trust fund. We couldn’t have touched it if we wanted to. They were trying to get it when he was 17, and we were trying to protect it. Luckily the Marin courts were very good about it and didn’t give it to them". He later said, “I’d gotten out of the teenage phase and realized my parents weren’t doing anything wrong but were trying to protect me”
In 2001, Smith was quoted as saying, "I started Home Improvement when I was 7, and the show ended when I was 16. I never had the chance to decide what I wanted to do with my life. When I was 16, I knew that I didn't want to act anymore."
It is still a mystery whether he married Van Pelt for getting rid of his parents or if he was in love with a lady who is 16 years older than him. The pair, after their marriage, opened a restaurant called Play Food in California which was specialized in vegan & organic food. Both of them had a son, Nolan Eric Smith. As life moved on, the age difference created distance between them. Their lifestyle and way of thinking was completely different and this ended up in a divorce, in 2007. Taran did not have a girlfriend before he met Heidi.

On other hand, his parents were accounting that he is still a teenager going through a phase of rebellion. They said that they cannot accept a 33 year old lady having an influence over their son. His parents revealed that within weeks of meeting Heidi, Smith changed. He changed his belief towards spirituality, society, his objective towards higher studies, his view towards his parents & siblings. His feelings towards movies, video games & other thing were not same as that of a 16 year old teenager could have. On the relationship between Heidi & Smith, both said that the gap of ages between them will raise differences. On this, Heidi said that she is an artist & has a fresh look on life, and age difference does not bother her and she has only one thing to fight, which is the selection of dishes. Similarly, Smith also shared the same view that when people listened about us, they think from a different angle but when they see us, they understand that our relationship is perfect.
