Terri Lyne Carrington was born on August 4, 1965 in Massachusetts, USA. Her family had a long connection with music as both of her parents played some sort of musical instruments. Her mother was a piano player while her father played saxophone. Her father also headed the Boston jazz Society so it is fair to say that he had a great influence on the music industry. Since a very young age, Terri started to incline towards music as it was all around her. She was fascinated by what music could do and so started playing musical instruments at a very young age. When she was just 7 her parents gave her a drum that belonged to her grandfather Matt Carrington who himself was a very famous drummer of his time.
This day changed her life forever as it took a turn in the direction of music. She did not go to any music school for the first couple of years and learned all by herself with the help of her parents. She gave her first stage performance at Wichita Jazz festival when she was just 9 years old. When she was just 11 years old she got a scholarship from Berklee College of Music. When she was just 12 years old she was profiled on the PBS kids biography program Rebop, this further encouraged her in the art of music. She then started studying arts of drumming at the Berklee School and toured the USA performing at various competitions. After completing her education, she moved to New York to pursue her music career. She did some stage shows there but wasn't as popular as she wanted to be so she then moved to Los Angeles where she got a job at The Arsenio Hall Show. She started working at the show as a drummer. Then, in the late 1990s Terri worked as the drummer on the late night television show VIBE, which at the time was hosted by the very famous comedian Sinbad. Following her stint on the shows, in 1996 she worked with Peabo Bryson on "Always Reach for Your Dreams", a song which was commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games, a very incredible opportunity which she was very grateful to be a part of.
She then realized her potential and wanted to record her own songs. She started writing her own songs and then made a new album called Real Life Story. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2002 she released another album called Jazz is the Spirit with Wallace Rooney and Herbie Hancock. This album was very well received in the European countries. In 2004 she released Structure with Adam rogers. This album was a big hit as well. She was now a very well-known personality in the music industry after giving back to back hit albums. Besides drumming she is also an entrepreneur as she has partnered in Herbert Carrington Media since 2007. She also has many business ventures all across the USA.
As an business entrepreneur, Terri is a partner in Hebert Carrington Media. The company was founded in 2007 and is currently based in Boston, Washington DC, Atlanta, New Jersey, Chicago, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
