An American actor and film producer, Tom Selleck is best known through the 80s TV series Magnum, P.I as the main character, private investigator named <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Magnum">Thomas Magnum</a>. Since then, he has played a character in more than 50 movies and series in total, some of them being <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lassiter_(film)">Lassiter</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Baseball">Mr. Baseball</a> and Three Men and a Baby.

<a href="/biography/tom-selleck">Thomas William “Tom” Selleck</a> was born on January 29, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan, son of Martha Selleck and Robert Dean Selleck. His mother was a stay-at-home mom and his father worked as an executive and real estate investor. Shortly after Tom was born, they moved to California. The family also consists of an older brother named Robert, a younger sister named Martha and a younger brother named Daniel.

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Magnum">Thomas</a>, being the second child graduated from Grant High School in 1962 and entered the University of Southern California on a basketball scholarship and then studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. As a college student, he used to play for the USC Trojan’s basketball team and till this day he is a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Magnum">member</a> of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Trojan Knights, USC’s service and spirit organization. If anything, that shows Tom’s gentle side. During this time and for some time afterwards, he supported himself and his family financially by working as a model and making a couple of appearances in ‘The Dating Game’.

“Τhat wasn’t an acting performance: I really was just a scared <a href="/biography/tom-selleck">student</a> at USC. But all of my friends, my fraternity brothers, were going on, so I went on and did it. And I, uh, did not dominate. [Laughs.] I was rather frightened! You know, I remember the chairs all used to come around and then the lights would come on, and they said, ‘Well, be sure to smile when we introduce you,” said Tom in an interview when he was asked about his first appearance on the said show.

He was then asked about his second appearance and commented: “For some reason, they got suicidal and brought me back for the nighttime show, which meant that you got a much better date, both in the quality of the person on the other side of the stage and where you got to go. So I, uh, didn’t get that one, either. And I wasn’t any funnier! [Laughs.] I was just scared! Not a good start. But I’d never thought of acting when I was growing up, and I still hadn’t thought of acting even at that point.”

What seems to be quite interesting about the whole Selleck family is their bloodline. Tom – as well as his siblings – is 2 parts English and one part German. From his father’s side he is also a direct descendant of the famous English colonist Davis Selleck.

Former <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Magnum">Thomas Magnum</a> spent quite a few years with little or no recognition despite small roles in movies such as Coma and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myra_Breckinridge_(film)">Myra Breckinridge</a> and even a repeated role as private investigator Lance White in The Rockford Files. He also appeared in other T.V. shows, the most notable being The Young and the Restless and Charlie’s Angels.

Selleck’s big break came in 1980 when he was selected for the lead role in the series ‘Magnum P.I. ‘ Because he was locked in for the series, he was unable to accept the lead role in Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, a role that then famously went to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Ford">Harrison Ford</a>. The irony was that there was a writer’s strike for six months due to which the work on Magnum P.I. was delayed and Selleck could have done the Indiana Jones movie.

Magnum P.I. turned Selleck’s career around. The show went on for eight seasons and he won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for it. Fans even wanted him to appear as the titular character in the later Magnum P.I. movie. The show was set in Hawaii and was so popular that the Ferrari that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Magnum">Thomas Magnum</a> uses in the series is still referred to as the “Magnum” Ferrari. Other trademarks included a Hawaiian aloha shirt and a Detroit Tigers cap.

From there, Selleck went on to star in many movies, with the most notable of them being ‘Three Men and a Baby’ which was the highest grosser in 1987. Quigley Down Under, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lassiter_(film)">Lassiter</a>, ‘In and Out’, and ‘The Love Letter’ are among some of the other work he has done. His passion for westerns has also led him to work in movies such as Last Stand at Saber River and Crossfire Trail which was based on a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_L'Amour">Louis L’Amour</a> novel.

In recent years Selleck has appeared in the hugely popular Friends as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Burke_(Friends)">Dr.</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Burke_(Friends)">Richard Burke</a>, produced and starred in the Jesse Stone series and currently appears in the police drama Blue Bloods. Specifically for ‘In and Out’ and ‘Friends’ Tom dealt with quite some criticism against him due to some people’s belief that his television days were gone once and for all. Yet, thankfully for all of his fans, he didn’t take those people’s advice under serious consideration and went on to do the shows.

“In & Out and Friends were both cases where I got advice from professional people that I shouldn’t do them. In & Out for obvious reasons, Friends because they said, “It’s a TV show! You can’t guest on someone else’s TV show. They’ll say you’re crawling back to television!” You know, I believe in taking risks. I think that’s what actors need to do: They have to risk failing. So what? I’ve had a long career based on that philosophy. I said, “I haven’t done a sitcom since Taxi, and I like comedy, and I like the show!” he explains.

In his personal life, Selleck was married to model Jacqueline Ray in 1971 and adopted her son Kevin from her first marriage. However, they divorced in 1982. In 1987 he married his current wife Jillie Mack with whom he has a daughter called Hannah. He was a close <a href="/biography/tom-selleck">friend</a> of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlton_Heston">Charlton Heston</a>, who he succeeded as a public spokesman for the National Rifle Association.

His 6’2” height, trim 88 kg weight and his trademark moustache make him stand out in the public eye even today. The actor has homes in California, Maine and the Shetland Islands. He also enjoys working on his 60 acres avocado farm in Westlake Village, where he mainly lives. Tom has publicly spoken about his personal experience of living on a farm and he expressed his passion on getting outside and doing all kinds of chorus, from fixing roads to clearing brush.
