Tony Gonzalez is former NFL legend. He played the position of tight end on the football field for the Kansas City Chiefs. After a long career, he became a sports commentator and broadcaster.
Anthony David Gonzalez, better known as Tony Gonzalez was born on February 27, 1976 in Torrance California. He has an American nationality but there is an interesting mix in the bloodline of his family. Judy, his mother, has African-American, Euro-American, Mexican-American and Native-American ancestry. On the other side, his father is a mix of Cape Verdean, Scottish and Jamaican descent.
Tony enrolled to Huntington Beach High School in California during his teenage years. There he stood out as an excellent athlete playing basketball, baseball and football. His remarkable performance in the sports domain earned him in his senior year along with Tiger Woods, the Orange County High School Athlete of the Year recognition. In this same year, he also received the MVP title of the Orange County and Sunset League of Basketball.
He continued playing basketball and football during his college days. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied communications. He had outstanding results for both sports he competed in, but he had to make a decision on going pro in only one of them. There were some other athletes in the past that were able to play both sports like Bo Jackson. Bo Jackson played pro football for the Oakland Raiders while also playing in Major League Baseball. No one has ever played in the NBA while also playing another professional sport. The long schedule of the NBA makes it impossible for an athlete to try the feat.
Even though he loved basketball, in the end he decided to choose the NFL. He entered the NFL Draft after college. There was speculation that his decision was influenced by his mentor, Steve Mariucci, who was about to become an NFL coach.
The only thing Tony couldn’t achieve during his football career was having the Vince Lombardy Trophy in his hands. He was an excellent player that could have won the championship but the football gods never shined their light on him. If he was on a team that was contending the championship, his skills would have put them over the top.
He retired right after the 2012 season, playing his last NFL game with the Atlanta Falcons against the California Panthers. Most of his football career were played with the Kansas City Chiefs, starting with them in 1997 and ending his run with them in 2008. Right after that season, Atlanta welcomed him to play his last 5 seasons with the Falcons where he wore number 88.

During his time in the NFL, he was picked 14 times to play in the Pro Bowl, starting in 1999 and ending in 2013. He held the first-team all-pro recognition on 6 occasions and second team all pro 4 times. He got the first team All Pac 10 in 1996 and the Consensus All-American that same year when he was playing in college. He is proud to count himself among the lucky few to be part of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.
His stats include 111 receiving touchdowns, 15,127 receiving yards and 1,325 receptions. All these great numbers certainly have earned him a large net worth of 30 million dollars.
Tony has also worked as actor and holds 6 credits on his resume. He started playing himself in 2004. His acting jobs include “Married to the Kellys”, “Celebrity Cooking Showdown”, “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Kansas City Chiefs”, “Oprah Winfrey's The Big Give” and the TV series “One Tree Hill”.
Being involved on the entertaining business, he has tried to act as somebody besides himself. His first appearance was in 2005 in “A.I. Assault” where he played Derek Williams. Later on, he got a small part on “NCIS” playing special agent Tony Francis.
In an interview with Acrons, Tony was asked how he prepared for life after his long football career, “When I was playing football, I dabbled in business and television to find out what I really wanted to do. I tried a couple of business ventures, but it wasn’t my cup of tea. I loved being in front of the camera and knew the future I wanted was working for some place like CBS. I got that job [as an analyst on the show ‘The NFL Today’ in 2014], but it wasn’t making me totally happy. [He’s cited the travel schedule—he was flying from his California home to New York each week during the season—as the reason.] So I quit CBS [in March]. It was scary, but I knew I’d either stay and not be as happy as I could be, or take the risk and see what happens. Now I’m at FOX and loving it—it’s only 10 minutes from my house so I get to spend more time with my family.”
Tony took good care of his finances and set himself and his family up nicely for life after his retirement. Acorns asked him to reveal his secrets on how to avoid overspending, “I guess it’s called four kids! It reminds me every day to keep things in check... Now I don’t care about cars, watches and jewelry. The only thing I care about is going to work and traveling [with my family]. You also can’t compare yourself to your friends. I have a group of friends who have done very well financially, and I can’t spend like them. I don’t have an ego. I just try to learn from them and eventually plan on getting where they are.”
Despite not being legally married, Gonzalez is committed to his lover, October. They celebrated their union in 2007 in a ceremony equivalent to a wedding where October became his wife symbolically. Tony had 2 children with October, their children are called Malia (daughter) and River (son). However, Tony also had a son called Nikko before October’s time with the beautiful entertainment reporter, Lauren Sánchez.
