Unai Emery was born on November 3, 1971 in Hondarribia, Spain. Unai is a Spanish soccer manager and former player. He is the current head coach of Arsenal in the English Premier League.
Upbringing
Unai grew up and was born in the city of Handaribia in the Basque country. He graduated from Real Sociedad. His father and grandfather were footballers and they were played the goalkeeper positions. His uncle, Roman played as a midfielder.
Playing Career
He played the position of left midfielder during his playing career. He mostly competed in the Segunda Division and was able to play 215 matches where he scored nine goals during his five seasons.
When he was 24 years, he played in five La Liga games and he scored when they played against Albacete Balompie which ended up being an 8-1 home win. He continued to play mostly within the Segunda Division. He retired from Lorca Deportiva CF when he was 32 years old and he had only one season with Segunda Division B.
Start to Coaching Career
After a modest playing career, which was spent mostly in Spain's Segunda División, Emery transitioned into coaching after retiring from playing in 2004. Since he was seriously injured when he was playing in the 2004-2005 season with Lorca Deportiva CF, he was given a chance at the vacant manager position by the club’s president. The new role was a great idea as he helped the club to achieve success and advanced to the second division. He awarded the Miguel Muñoz Trophy for his excellent coaching ability. It was also the first time in the entire history of the club that they won against top level competition. In his second season, the Murcain club was able to reach 69 points and they finished at the fifth position. This was only five points behind the first spot.
It was a great redemption story for Unai. He had been injured during a game and was forced to retire but he didn’t know that there was another chapter waiting for him in his life. Instead of having a tragic exit from soccer, Unai got another chance to succeed. His move to coaching was a natural fit. When he took his club to new heights, it proved how smart of a football he was. During his playing career, he had to use his physical tools along with his mental tools. As a coach, he no longer had the responsibility of performing physically, now he could use his mental tools to inspire his players and put them in the best position to succeed.
After his first club, Unai Emery moved on La Liga club Almería where he helped the squad overachieve and helped them reach their first ever promotion in 2007. Unai spent four years at club but the biggest moment for him was when lead them to their first ever promotion.

His success at Almeria earned him a chance to coach an elite team called Valencia. He routinely had the team in the top three but he left the team after he could not get along with the executives on the team.
Tough Lesson
After his stint with Valencia, Unai departed Spain for the first time. He left to go coach Spartak Moscow on May 13, 2012 when the owner, Leonid Fedun announced that Unai had been signed for two seasons. It was only a short run that lasted 6 months. On November 25, 2012, Unai was fired for his poor performance. The last game he coached for Spartak was a 1-5 loss versus Dnamo Moscow. Unai said he tried his best when he coached in Russia but there were multiple reasons why things didn’t work out. He said he personally did not feel comfortable coaching in the country. He was more used to having a liberal lifestyle like he did in Spain for most of his playing and coaching career. He just didn’t feel right when he went to work in Russia. He also had trouble with the style of play in the Russian league.
He had to adapt to how different the players moved compared to the other leagues he played in. He expected to at least be given a full year so that he could implement his style and have his players get accustomed to his coaching style. When he was fired before his contract ran out, it was a wake up call for Unai. He took the blame on himself because he had failed at a lower level of competition. For him to get back to the top of the coaching ranks, he had to take a step back and reflect on what he was doing wrong. He went back to the drawing board and changed his style to match the modern times.
Coaching Rise
During 2013, he signed with Sevilla and he took the club to Europa League victories three times. He started to build a reputation because of his style and clever transactions in the transfer market. After his stint with Sevilla, he went on to join Paris Saint-Germain which is a French club.
He didn’t have that much success with the club but he did lead them win the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue and Trophée des Champions in his first year. In his second year, he won all four domestic trophies including Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue and Trophée des Champions.
After his contract with Paris Saint-Germain ended, he moved on to the Premier League where signed on to coach Arsenal in 2018. Arsenal is one of the top teams in all of football so their trust in Unai shows that he is an excellent coach. They will rely on him to bring them lots of success like he has for his previous teams. His philosophy and tactics had contributed a great deal to his successful career.
Personal Life
He has been married to Louisa Fernandez since 2005. With his wife, they are parents to a son born in 2003 in Madrid. His net worth is 13 million dollars.
