Vera Farmiga was born in Clifton, New Jersey, to Ukrainian-American parents. Her father was a systems analyst, and her mother worked as a schoolteacher—both employed in New Jersey at the time of her birth. Raised in a close-knit Ukrainian community, Farmiga grew up speaking Ukrainian as her first language. She learned English only at the age of six when she began attending kindergarten. During her early childhood, her entire family, including her sister, converted to Pentecostal Christianity.
Farmiga graduated from Hunterdon Central Regional High School in 1991. It was during her junior year that she first developed an interest in acting, encouraged by friends to participate in school plays. Pursuing this newfound passion, she went on to study performing arts at Syracuse University, earning her degree in 1995.
In February 1996, Farmiga appeared as Miranda in a production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest by the American Conservatory Theater. She then gained wider notice in the fantasy-adventure television series Roar, aired on Fox, where she played the role of Catlin, a former slave. The series also starred Heath Ledger and Sebastian Roché, who would later become her first husband. During the late 1990s, Farmiga continued to land roles in stage productions, television, and film. One of her early film roles was in Return to Paradise (1998), where she appeared alongside Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix.
Rather than attending conventional auditions, Farmiga often submitted self-recorded audition tapes to casting directors. One such tape caught the attention of acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese, leading to her role as Dr. Madolyn Madden, a police psychologist, in the Academy Award-winning 2006 film The Departed. The film also featured Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson, and marked a turning point in Farmiga's acting career.
In 2008, Farmiga appeared in the film adaptation of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The following year, she starred opposite George Clooney in Jason Reitman’s drama-comedy Up in the Air, released on December 4, 2009. The film received widespread critical acclaim and earned Farmiga both Academy Award and BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actress.
Farmiga met actor Sebastian Roché while working on the series Roar. The two began a relationship and moved to The Bahamas at the end of the series in 1997. They married the same year but divorced in 2004. Later, Farmiga started dating musician Renn Hawkey of the band Deadsy, after being introduced by mutual friend and director Allen Hughes on the set of Touching Evil. The couple married in 2008 in a private ceremony, during which Farmiga was reportedly five months pregnant. They welcomed their first child, a son, in 2009 in New York, followed by a daughter, Gytta, born in 2010.
Vera Farmiga's net worth is estimated to be approximately $10 million, reflecting her successful career in film and television.
