Yul Brynner was a Russian-born film and stage actor best known for his portrayal of King Mongkut of Siam in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I. Yul Brynner played the role of the king of Siam 4,625 times on stage, and received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his stage work; he also received an Academy Award for Best Actor for the film version, and an additional Tony Award honoring his 4,625 performances in The King and I.
Yul Brynner was born Yuliy Borisovich Briner on July 11, 1920, in Vladivostok, Far Eastern Republic (present day Russia). Yul Brynner appeared opposite Charlton Heston in Cecil B. de Mille’s 1956 film, The Ten Commandments. Yul Brynner was married four times, fathered three children, and adopted two. His first marriage, with actress Virginia Gilmore, lasted twenty six years and the couple had one son. His second marriage was with Chilean model Doris Kleiner with whom he had one child. Brynner’s third wife was with French socialite Jacqueline Tiion de la Chaume, with whom he was married ten years. At age 62 Yul Brynner married his fourth wife, Kathy Lee, a twenty six year old ballerina.
