George Whitesides was born on august 1939 in Kentucky, USA. He was born to American parents of white ethnicity. He belonged to a middle-class family as his father worked as a small businessman and his mother was a homemaker. He was a very bright student when he was in highs school. He went to a school in his neighborhood and completed his graduation in 1957. He got a degree in A.B from the prestigious Harvard University in the year 1960.
For his Ph.D. degree, he went to California institute of technology and got it in 1964. His knowledge led him to a point where he wanted to do research in the field of chemistry. In 1963 he started to research at MIT where he also worked as a professor. He worked at the college for 19 years in which he did extensive research on polymers that has led to their creation and increase in the strength at a very low price.
After 19 years of working at MIT, he moved to Harvard in 1982 to further his research. He joined the chemistry department as a professor and was made the head of the laboratory. He was later promoted to the chairman of his department which he had for 3 years before moving to another department. He has been currently working on many of his projects.
After leaving Harvard he co-founded Whitesides research, a firm that helps students with their project and has the faculty to do extensive research which is not possible in colleges. He also owns a very big lab where he urges students to lock beyond the obvious and bring about change in science. He has been also called Google Scholar for his vast amount of knowledge that he possess. He has been promoting his lab and also working on many projects in the lab. He has written man books in his lifetime many of which have become bestsellers.
He also does public service besides his research. He often takes part in charitable organizations and fundraisers as eh believes that people should give back to the society and to the unprivileged. He has been very vocal for taking climate change seriously as it has been seen as just another natural phenomenon by many of the countries and their governments. He has been awarded man award for his extensive research in the field of chemistry.
He has also founded many other companies that help in the research field. The combined market value of all those companies is estimated to be around $20 billion. He has also written books for many publications in his lifetime. He is a married man although not much is known about his wife. He has two children with are studying at the moment. He hasn’t got Nobel Prize until known but he could get one in the future. His net worth is expected to be around $2 billion which is studying for a scientist.
