Hannah Gross was born on September 25, 1992 in Toronto, Canada. She is the little girl of Canadian actors Paul Gross and Martha Burns. Hannah was born with acting in her blood. She didn't decide to pursue the specialty professionally until moving on from high school. Making up her family is a brother named Jack Gross. Along with her sibling, Hannah showed up in their father's film Men with Brooms (2002) and Wilby Wonderful (2004).

Hannah had started acting in high school where she participated in various school plays. The defining moment for her in those years was the point at which she handled a role in a school production of Macbeth. After high school, Gross left Toronto in 2008 for New York where she enrolled at the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She studied Religious Studies as a minor and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater. Subsequent to graduating in 2012, Gross stayed in New York where she lived in Manhattan's Chinatown neighborhood.

In New York, Hannah started appearing in low budget outside the box films, making her presentation in Matthew Porterfield's I Used to Be Darker (2013) which was supported with a financial budget of $42,000. In the wake of appearing in a string of short movies, she had a role in Christmas Again (2014), Uncertain Terms (2014), and Stinking Heaven (2015). Hannah's greatest break would come not long after she was found by David Fincher who is famous in Hollywood for his directing. David is the same man who found gifts like Kristen Stewart, and Rooney Mara. She was cast as Debbie Mitford in Netflix's Mindhunter. In August 2019, the second season of Mindhunter was released on Netflix.

While many fans condemned her for being aloof and dull, other people who flew to her defense with some arguments that her role on Mindhunter necessitates that she goes about as a rationally directed individual.
