Education and Early Athletic Achievements

Howie Long began his academic and athletic journey at Milford High School in Massachusetts. A standout athlete, he excelled not only in football but also in track and field, basketball, and shot put and discus—setting school records in the latter events. His versatility earned him induction into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. In his senior year, he was named to the Scholastic Coach All-American Team, highlighting his exceptional performance on the field.

Following high school, Long attended Villanova University, where he lettered in football all four years. His talent and tenacity on the field earned him a spot in the prestigious Blue-Gray Football Classic, where he was named Most Valuable Player in 1980. While still at Villanova, Long also claimed the title of Northern Collegiate Heavyweight Champion, displaying his athletic dominance beyond the football field.

Professional Football Career

In 1981, Howie Long was drafted by the Oakland Raiders (now Las Vegas Raiders), marking the beginning of a 13-season career in the National Football League (NFL). Known for his formidable size and strength, Long quickly became a cornerstone of the Raiders’ defensive lineup. He was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times and was named First Team All-Pro three times and Second Team All-Pro twice between 1983 and 1989.

Long was recognized as one of the best defensive linemen of his era. He was named NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year and received the NFLPA-AFC Defensive Lineman of the Year honor. He was also selected to the All-Madden Team in 1984 and 1985. In 1986, he was considered the top defensive player in the AFC and was voted to the Pro Bowl for four consecutive years. Long retired from professional football in 1993, leaving behind a legacy as one of the Raiders' most legendary players.
