Ivan Rakitić was born on March 10, 1988, in Möhlin, Switzerland, to Luka and Kata Rakitić. He spent the majority of his childhood in Switzerland. Ivan has two siblings—a brother named Dejan and a sister named Nikol. While often associated with his Croatian roots, he belongs to the White ethnic group and was born and raised in a Swiss setting.
Details surrounding Rakitić's formal education remain limited, as neither his elementary school, high school, nor any post-secondary institutions have been publicly disclosed. From a young age, however, he showed a strong inclination toward football. Encouraged by his father and brother, both of whom were involved in the sport, Rakitić committed to pursuing a professional football career early in life.
Rakitić began his professional football career in 2005 with FC Basel. He made his debut in European competition through the UEFA Cup and subsequently played in the Swiss Super League in 2006. His early performances drew significant attention, and in 2006, he was named the Swiss Super League’s Best Young Player—highlighting a promising start to his career.
In 2007, Rakitić transferred to German club Schalke 04. He played his first match for the team against Karlsruher SC during the DFL-Ligapokal. While Schalke did not win the tournament, Rakitić played a key role in their advance to the finals and later contributed to the team’s success in the DFB-Pokal during his time there.
In 2011, Rakitić joined La Liga club Sevilla FC. Initially offering average performances, he found his rhythm over time and was appointed team captain in 2013. Under his leadership, Sevilla captured the UEFA Europa League title, with Rakitić named Man of the Match in the final. His on-field leadership and consistent performances earned him La Liga Player of the Month honors.
