Iwan Rheon was born on December 13, 1985, in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. He is of Welsh ethnicity and the second son of Einar and Tomos Rheon. At the age of five, his family moved to Cardiff in hopes of providing him with a more nurturing environment and better opportunities for growth. Rheon attended Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, a Welsh-language secondary school, where he developed early interests in acting and music. Recognizing his passion for the performing arts, he pursued formal training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).
Iwan Rheon’s first professional acting role was on the Welsh television soap opera Pobol y Cwm. He appeared on the show until leaving to attend LAMDA. He made his stage debut in 2008 in Eight Miles High at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool. He gained further attention when he joined the cast of the musical Spring Awakening, where his performance received critical acclaim. The production won numerous accolades, including a Tony Award for Best Musical.
