Early Life and Education

Jacob “Jake” Arrieta was born on March 6, 1986, in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Plano, Texas. He attended Plano East Senior High School, where he developed as a standout baseball talent. In 2004, as a teenager, he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 31st round of the MLB Draft. However, Arrieta chose not to sign, opting instead to begin his college career at Weatherford Junior College.

Collegiate Career at Texas Christian University

A year later, Arrieta was drafted again, this time in the 26th round of the 2005 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He again declined to sign, choosing to transfer to Texas Christian University (TCU). While at TCU, Arrieta studied sport psychology and played for the Horned Frogs baseball team.

As a sophomore, he led all NCAA Division I pitchers with 14 wins. His outstanding performance earned him the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year award and recognition as a Second-Team College Baseball All-American.

International Play and U.S. National Team

In 2006, Arrieta was selected to play for the United States national baseball team. Competing in Cuba, he played a pivotal role in helping Team USA win the gold medal at the World University Baseball Championship.

Professional Debut with the Baltimore Orioles

In 2007, Arrieta was drafted in the fifth round by the Baltimore Orioles and signed with a $1.1 million signing bonus. He began his professional career in the Arizona Fall League, playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs. There, he recorded 16 scoreless innings and struck out 16 over 14 appearances, contributing to the team’s championship win.

Transition to Major League Baseball

Arrieta made his major league debut in 2010 with the Baltimore Orioles, facing the New York Yankees at Camden Yards. He secured a win in his debut and posted several strong performances early in his MLB career. However, by 2013, his performance had declined, and he began the season with a 1–1 record and a 6.63 ERA over several starts.
