In 1979, Lange appeared in Bob Fosse’s semi-autobiographical film All That Jazz, portraying the symbolic role of the Angel of Death. The performance helped reestablish her credibility in the film industry and marked the beginning of a successful series of roles that showcased her versatility. Around this time, she began a relationship with Russian ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.

In 1981, Lange and Baryshnikov welcomed a daughter, Alexandra. Although their relationship ended a few years later, Lange later entered into a long-term partnership with playwright and actor Sam Shepard. Together, they had two children: Hannah and Samuel Walker. The couple remained together for several years before separating in December 2011.

Beyond her acting career, Jessica Lange is also an accomplished photographer and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She has publicly discussed her struggles with depression, and in pursuit of mental well-being, she practices Buddhism, incorporating chanting and mantra recitation into her daily life.
