Jidenna Theodore Mobisson, known professionally as Jidenna, is a Nigerian-American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was born on May 4, 1985, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, to Tama Mobisson and Oliver Mobisson. Jidenna spent the first six years of his life in Nigeria before his family relocated to the United States.
While attending Milton Academy, a private preparatory school in Massachusetts, Jidenna co-founded a rap group called Black Spadez. It was during this formative time that he began writing and producing his own music. The group released its first album as part of a school project before Jidenna graduated from Milton in 2003.
Jidenna enrolled at Stanford University, where he initially pursued a degree in sound engineering. However, he later changed his major to Ritualistic Arts, a self-designed interdisciplinary program. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford in 2008. During his time at university, Jidenna developed his signature style of blending music, fashion, and cultural themes. He cites KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane among his musical influences, and attributes his understanding of fashion and psychology in part to a Stanford professor who had a strong impact on his overall personal development.
