Miller was born in Minnesota and took the lessons in opera singing when he was still young and afterwards he went to the University of Minnesota Duluth where he did the theatre. He did not continue to learn but stopped in the year 1980 and only few credits were remaining from graduating. However, he returned to the alma mater where he finished with the degree in the year 2007.

Before he appeared on Big Love, the main role he played on the television was when he played in the role of Lyle Nubbin in its three episodes of the show called Las Vegas.  from the year 1991, he did appear in  different television movies like  Everybody Loves Raymond, The Closer, Boston Legal, Desperate Housewives, Six Feet Under, The X Files, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Commish, Murphy Brown and Cold Case.

In 2003, he had the big role in the award winning TV movie called Secret Santa. He also appeared in the supporting role of Rush Hour 2, Galaxy Quest, and The Truman Show together with Men in Black II.  He is the voice of Bromley for Animated feature movie called The Swan Princess. He is current role as the cast of Brooklyn Nine Nine is still going on.
