Joseph “Joey” Votto was born on September 10, 1983, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He spent his childhood in the suburb of Etobicoke. His mother, Wendy Votto, worked as a restaurant manager, and his father, also named Joseph Votto, was a chef and an avid baseball fan. Votto’s father passed away at the age of 52. As a child, Joey was deeply influenced by baseball and had a poster of legendary hitter Ted Williams on his bedroom wall.
Joey attended Richview Collegiate Institute beginning in 1997, where he not only played baseball but was also active in basketball and hockey. After high school, he signed a National Letter of Intent to play college baseball for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. He has three siblings: one brother named Tyler, and twin brothers named Ryan and Paul.
Votto began making a name for himself in the Cincinnati Reds' organization during his third professional season in 2004, hitting 14 home runs and 26 doubles. Although he struggled during the 2005 season, he rebounded strongly in 2006 and was selected to play for the World Team in the All-Star Futures Game. In 2007, he played for the Louisville Bats, the Reds’ Triple-A affiliate.
Joey Votto made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on September 4, 2007, with the Cincinnati Reds. He delivered a promising performance by hitting 12 runs and four home runs that season. He made his first start at first base on September 14, 2007, against the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2008, he began as a backup to Scott Hatteberg but quickly secured the role as the Reds’ primary first baseman by April. A highlight from that year was his three-home-run game on May 7, 2008, against the Chicago Cubs. He set a Reds rookie record with 84 RBIs in his debut season.
Votto represented Team Canada in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and had an impressive showing, going four-for-five, including one home run, during a game against the United States. He was named National League Player of the Week for September 21–27, 2009.
