John Meehan was an American criminal, con artist and master manipulator who was born in the 1950s in San Jose, California. His father ran the Diamond Wheel Casino in San Jose, California which is where Meehan's sisters say that he picked up some of his bad habits. Meehan attended Prospect High School in Saratoga, California but was reported to have begun having issues when his parents split up. A former classmate once described Meehan as "rotten top to bottom". Even from a young age, Meehan had a way with the ladies which earned him the nickname "Dirty John". He dropped out of law school in his second year and met his first wife in 1990. Following his marriage to nurse anesthesiologist Tonia Sells, Meehan began working in his wife's field until he lost his license to work as a nurse anesthetist.
His employer accused him of stealing drugs that he should have been administering to patients. Meehan stayed with Sells for ten years before they got a divorce, by then they already had two children. Soon after his divorce, Meehan found himself in jail for stealing drugs. Stealing was just one of his many cons, Meehan jumped in front of a car and put glass in fast food just for the settlement money. In August of 2016, Meehan attacked a woman named Terra Newell, the daughter of his current wife, in her Newport Beach, California parking lot. He had been waiting for her with a "kidnap kit" which included duct tape and knives. During the kidnapping attempt, Meehan was stabbed several times. He died of his injuries in a hospital at age 57.
