Kallen Esperian is an Armenian-American lyric soprano who made her debut in Philadelphia as Mimi in La Boheme in 1986 and is regarded by many as one of the greatest operatic sopranos of our time. Kallen Esperian was born on June 8, 1961, in Barrington, Illinois. Kallen studied ballet at the age of three and began taking piano lessons when she was ten; she did not, however, take singing lessons until she turned sixteen. Kellen earned a bachelor of music degree in vocal performance from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Professional success began when she won the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition in 1985.
Since then, Esperian has sung leading roles in every major opera house in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera; the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden; and La Scala in Milan; often paired with notable tenors, including Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Kallen Esperian is a noted philanthropist; her performance for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at Memphis’ Orpheum Theater was televised and aired nationally. She also performed at the groundbreaking for the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She has performed many times with the Memphis Boys Choir, and has even taught at summer camp. Recently, the Department of Music at the University of the South in Sewanee welcomed Kallen Esperian as Artist in Residence for vocal studies for the 2018-2019 academic year.
