Kyrie Irving is an American professional basketball player best known for his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. He was born on March 23, 1992, in Melbourne, Australia, while his father was playing professional basketball there. He was raised in West Orange, New Jersey, after his family returned to the United States when he was two years old. Kyrie holds dual citizenship in both Australia and the United States.
Irving is the son of Drederick and Elizabeth Irving and the stepson of Shetellia Irving. He has an older sister named Asia and a younger sister named London. His father, Drederick Irving, played college basketball at Boston University under coach Rick Pitino, where he was teammates with Shawn Teague. After college, Drederick played professionally in Australia for the Bulleen Boomers. Kyrie's mother passed away when he was four years old, and he was subsequently raised with the help of his aunts.
Growing up in West Orange, New Jersey, Kyrie Irving was deeply influenced by his father's involvement in basketball. He frequently attended adult league games and was inspired by professional players he watched at the Continental Airlines Arena. By the fourth grade, Irving publicly stated his goal of playing in the NBA. He also played for the Road Runners, a team affiliated with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).
Irving began his high school basketball career at Montclair Kimberley Academy, where he played as a freshman and sophomore. He then transferred to St. Patrick High School to face stronger competition. In college, Irving committed to play for Duke University under renowned coach Mike Krzyzewski. During the 2010–11 season, he averaged 17.4 points per game over the first eight games, showing significant potential early on.
