Maya Moore, born Maya April Moore in June 1989, is an American professional basketball player known for her exceptional career in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri, and raised by her mother. Although she did not grow up with her father, he was known for being a talented athlete, something Moore often heard growing up.
Her basketball journey began at the age of three when her mother installed a basketball hoop on the back door of their home. This early exposure fostered her love of the game. She later attended Collins Hill High School in Georgia, where she was a standout athlete and a consistent starter on the school’s basketball team.
Moore’s high school career included selections to the USA Today Freshman and Sophomore All-America Teams. As a key player for the Eagles, she led the team through competitive playoff runs, although they ultimately fell short in the finals against the nationally top-ranked Christ the King High School. In addition to basketball, Moore also excelled in track and field, winning the high jump at the 2005 Georgia State 5A Championships. Academically, she maintained a 4.0 GPA and graduated with honors, receiving recognition as the school's "best all-around" senior.
Moore attended the University of Connecticut (UConn), where she had a historic collegiate career playing for the UConn Huskies. Averaging 21 points per game during her sophomore year, she became the team’s top scorer, setting records, including becoming the fastest player in UConn history to reach 1,000 points. She was only the second junior in UConn history to win the Associated Press Player of the Year award.
Her collegiate accolades continued into her senior year. She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Philadelphia Region and earned selections to the Big East All-First Team. Additionally, she was honored as Big East Player of the Year. Under her leadership, the Huskies won two NCAA National Championships, and she concluded her college career as the fourth-highest scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history, with 3,036 points.
